Position Description
The Centre for Law, Technology and Society is seeking a Communications Assistant to assist its Director in promoting our community, regular activities, and research on campus, in Canada and abroad.
The University of Ottawa Centre for Law, Technology and Society is Canada’s leading research group in technology, law, ethics and policy. Gathering a research community from the Faculties of Law, Arts, Social Sciences and Engineering. CLTS is home to 4 Canada Research Chairs, 5 University Research Chairs, 2 SSHRC Partnership Grants (eQuality and Open AIR), and CIPPIC.
The Communications Assistant is responsible for promoting the Centre’s community, events and research on the Centre’s website, newsletter, social media and through original video and design work. The Communications Assistant manages the creation, production and distribution of digital and print material, marketing and media activities. The Communications Assistant will support the centre by contributing to the design, development and dissemination of communication materials; and will ensure compliance with the university and centre’s branding guidelines. The Communication Assistant will support our digital presence including the website, social media platforms, and media relations efforts.
As the Centre is growing, the Communications Assistant will have the opportunity to assist the Director in developing strategies to increase the Centre’s visibility to diverse global audiences, expanding digital sharing capacity, and strengthening internal communication and communication with internal stakeholders.
The Communications Assistant works closely with the Centre’s Administrative Assistant and project coordinators at CLTS. Occasionally, the Communications Assistant will be seconded to support key initiatives or events.
We are seeking a candidate that could support the following functions:
- Writing news and other announcements
- Updating our websites and creating contents (on Drupal, and Wordpress)
- Managing social network accounts (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram)
- Recording, editing, and animating video (on Creative Suite and YouTube; experience in virtual events is an asset)
- Designing posters, booklets, reports, etc. (on Creative Suite)
Minimum qualifications: Bilingualism (French & English) ; Superior writing, editing and proofreading skills in one of the two languages (preferably in both); Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite; Ability to multitask effectively.
Assets: Experience in communication or marketing (print or digital; professional or not); Experience in hosting virtual gatherings; Knowledge of Slack and Microsoft Teams; Knowledge of Drupal and/or Wordpress.
Duration: Positions are open for the next academic term, for 4 or 8 months with possibility of renewal for the summer term. The number of hours are to be discussed depending on the candidate’s availability.
Number of positions: While the preference will be given to candidates able to support most of the functions, two complementary candidates could be hired to work as a team and provide a broad range of expertises to the Centre’s community.
Eligibility: The candidate must be enrolled as a student at uOttawa, preferably within the Faculties of Law, Arts, Social Sciences, or Engineering. Preference will be given to candidates who qualify for the Work-Study Program.
