As part of Giving Tuesday 2020, the University of Ottawa is announcing the creation of the Kerr Fellows program to bring the very best students from around the world to the University of Ottawa and link a generation of new leaders to Ian R. Kerr and his legacy. Each year, Kerr Fellows will be supported with a $25,000 scholarship from the Ian R. Kerr Memorial Fund, additional financial support from the University of Ottawa, a travel stipend to attend conferences, and a guaranteed placement in their field of study within the technology law internship program.
CLTS faculty member Dr. Michael Geist has been awarded an Insight Grant by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada to investigate new ways Canada can protect freedom of expression while addressing risks of online harm.

Dr. Florian Martin-Bariteau, director of the Centre for Law, Technology and Society, is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Céline Castets-Renard (Civil Law Section) and Prof. Vivek Krishnamurthy (Common Law Section) as Faculty members, as well as of Dr. Karine Gentelet (UQO) as an Associate Member.
It is with enormous grief and sadness that we announce that our dear friend, colleague, and world-widely renowned law and technology expert, Dr. Ian Kerr passed away on August 27, 2019 due to complications arising from cancer.
CLTS Faculty member Dr. Elizabeth Dubois has received an Insight Development Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) for a project entitled “Mean Tweets: The impact of online harassment on political journalists in Canada”. Her research will examine the ways in which journalists respond to online harassment, as well as differences in the quantity and type of harassment received based on gender.
The Centre for Law, Technology and Society is delighted to announce that Dr. B. Courtney Doagoo will be returning to its community as an Artificial Intelligence and Society Fellow.
We are pleased to invite submissions for We Robot 2020, the 9th annual robotics law, ethics and policy conference, to be held at the University of Ottawa, Canada, on April 2–4, 2020. Previously, the conference has been held at the University of Miami, the University of Washington, Stanford University, and Yale University.
CLTS Faculty members Dr. Elizabeth Dubois, and Dr. Florian Martin-Bariteau, are co-investigators on a strategic $2.5 Million Partnership Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) on journalism innovation that will support the development of the Global Journalism Innovation Lab/Lab mondial d’innovation en journalisme. The Centre is also a partner of this strategic grant.
Faculty member Dr Teresa Scassa has been appointed Chair of the Government of Canada’s new Canadian Statistics Advisory Council. The Council will advise the Chief Statistician and the Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development on matters concerning the overall quality of the national statistical system, including the relevance, accuracy, accessibility and timeliness of its data.
