The Supreme Court of Canada has granted CIPPIC leave to intervene in R. v. Chehil & R. v. MacKenzie (SCC File Nos. 34524 & 34397, respectively) , two now joint appeals in which the SCC that will examine the 'reasonable suspicion' standard in the context of sniffer dog searches. The 'reasoanble suspicion' standard forms the basis for a rapidly increasing number of privacy-invasive state powers including several electronic surveillance powers currently being proposed by the Government in an attempt to increase its online spying capacities.
On November 21, 2012, the Health Law Student Association will host a discussion of Rassouli v Sunnybrook, to be heard by the Supreme Court of Canada, December 2102. This is the second year Professor Geist has received this honour. He joins Chief Justice of the Ontario Court of Appeal Warren Winkler, Supreme Court of Canada Justice Morris Fish, and Leader of the New Democratic Party Thomas Mulcair. Described as “arguably the most influential voice on law and technology in the country not only within the legal profession but also by educating the Canadian public” he is lauded for his Toronto Star and Ottawa Citizen columns, and his highly regarded blog. From May 23rd to 25th 2012 the University of Ottawa’s Centre for Law, Technology and Society (CLTS) hosted more than twenty-five scholars and a number of graduate students from over a dozen Canadian universities and institutions to a workshop entitled the Multidisciplinary Approaches to Intellectual Property Law. The event was organized by Professor Teresa Scassa (Faculty of Common Law), Professor Mistrale Goudreau (Faculty of Civil Law), Madelaine Saginur (Executive Director, CLTS), and Courtney Doagoo (PhD student).
